When you look in the mirror, you may have features you’d like to change. Dermal fillers are helping millions of people achieve their aesthetic goals — with no downtime or invasive treatments required.
With the rise of cosmetic fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Sculptra®, patients from their 20s to 50s and beyond have questions about what fillers can — and can’t — help them achieve. In this post, we’ll explore what to expect from dermal fillers to help you establish realistic expectations and set better treatment goals.
What Are Dermal Fillers Made Of?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves dermal fillers made of four materials. Three are biodegradable and one is not. These are:
- Hyaluronic Acid — A naturally occurring sugar in the body that lubricates joints and eyes.
- Calcium hydroxylapatite — A mineral found in bone.
- Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — A biodegradable, synthetic polymer.
- Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) — A bovine (cow) collagen solution that is made of tiny beads. This is used in the filler Bellafill®.
What Can Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dermal fillers are designed to smooth the skin and enhance its appearance by restoring fullness or creating additional volume. In turn, this can enhance facial symmetry and improve contouring, leading to a more youthful look or desired effects.
Areas treatable with dermal fillers include:
- The lower and mid-face regions
- The under eye area
- The nose
- The lips
- The hands
Most fillers are customized for specific purposes, such as reducing vertical lip lines, treating nasolabial folds, plumping the lips, and rejuvenating the hands.

What Filler Can’t Do
Though fillers are capable of giving you a complete makeover in one visit, there are some cosmetic goals they cannot help you achieve. These include:
- Tightening extremely loose skin
- Treating discoloration or acne scars
- Rejuvenating severe jowls or marionette lines
Furthermore, some patients may not qualify as candidates for dermal fillers, such as those with certain allergies, immunocompromised patients, and those with bleeding disorders.
